Thoughts on Middlebury

In a seesaw game in which our Ephman led 3 – 0 after a quiet first half, 10 – 7 at the end of the third, and 17 – 10 with 60 seconds left in the game, the Williams College football team came out on the short end of the stick this past Saturday when they lost 23 – 20 in a heartbreaking OT loss to the Middlebury Panthers.  The Ephs got Joe Mallock’s 2nd FG of the game to go ahead 20 – 17 in the first possession of the OT period, but the Ephs were unable to hold Middlebury (who had won the OT toss, deferred and) who were able to score on a 3rd and 10 pass from the 14 to win the game in dramatic fashion.
Middlebury departed Williamstown at 2 – 2, while the loss leaves the Ephs at 1 – 3 as they head into a final (and brutal) 4 games stretch which include 2 consecutive road game (@ 2 – 2 Tufts then @ winless Hamilton), a home match vs (currently #1 in New England and 4 – 0) Wesleyan, and a final grudge match @ (#5 in New England and currently 4 – 0) Amherst.

Williams and Middlebury both had first halves dominated by defense, with the only scoring coming off the foot of senior JoeMallock who had 2 FG’s in this game and won NESCAC Special Team Player of the Week (POTW).  Joe now owns the Williams record for career FG’s with 24.  Link to the story is available at:

The 2nd half started with exchanges of punts.  Williams then lost a fumble deep in its own territory which was returned 19 yards for a Middlebury TD.  But the Ephs responded 2 series later to take the lead 10 – 7 when Alex Scyocurka had a 30 yard jaunt to paydirt(to make up for his earlier lost fumble).

The Eph defense played tough, held Middlebury on a few drives, and eventually, early in the 4th quarter, had a goalline stand of 3 consecutive plays inside the Eph 5 to hold Middlebury to a tying 10 all FG.

Williams then went ahead 17 – 10 with 6+ minutes remaining after a 77 yard pass to the 8 yard line from Austin Lommen to Lewis Hayes that led to a Hayes 2 yard TD reception a few plays later.

Middlebury and the Ephs then traded punts as the 4th quarter was winding down.  Middlebury got the ball back with 2:15 left in the game and proceeded to conduct a 2 minute drill (to include a 4th and 10) that resulted, with 59 seconds left, in a Middlebury TD pass and converted PAT to tie the game at 17.

Game ended tied at 17 – 17, and Middlebury won it in OT (as described above).
It was a difficult loss for Williams who pretty much split the statistical battle with Middlebury, outgained the Panthers in Total Offense, but did have more penalties/yards, and who also lost the turnover battle, too.

Williams was led offensively by the passing of Austin Lommen (19 of 29 for 239 yards), the receiving of Lewis Hayes (4 for 116 yards and a TD), and the running of captain Alex Scyocurka (27 for 117 yards and a TD).

Defensively the Ephs were again led by James O’Grady who again recorded double digit tackles.

In summary… BRUTALLY TOUGH loss for our Ephmen.  The effort was there, and we had the opportunities….. we just again came up slightly short.

Anyway, for your conveniences I’ve included the two respective schools’ write-ups below:
