Thoughts on Tufts

Our Ephmen came out strong again a rising Tufts Jumbo team, took a lead at 7 – 0 early in the first quarter, had the lead at 13 – 7 at the end of the first quarter, but relinquished the lead off 13 points in the 2nd quarter, were down 27 – 13 at the end of the 3rd, and just couldn’t overcome the Tufts defense despite making the score 27 – 20 in the 4th quarter with 5:22 left in the game.
Unfortunately for the Ephs, following the last Eph score, Tufts retained possession of the ball for over the next 5 minutes before they finally punted the ball back to Williams with 14 seconds remaining in the game.  Time expired soon thereafter as Williams was unable to return the punt to paydirt.
Tufts thus departed Williamstown at 3 – 2 and headed for a showdown at undefeated Amherst next Sat, while the loss leaves the Ephsat 1 – 4 as they head into a final 3 games stretch starting next week @ winless Hamilton followed by a Homecoming game vs the now 4 – 1 (after an OT loss to Amherst) Wesleyan, and a final grudge match @ (now #4 in New England and currently 5 – 0 and tied with Trinity for the NESCAC lead) Amherst.

As far as this game…. We were close.  If one checks the stats below, you can see Williams and Tufts are close across the board in nearly every statistical category.   We did have trouble, however, in rushing the ball, only ended up with a team net of 46 yards, and that lack of ability to control the LOS cost us in the TOP (time of possession) stat.

Unfortunately for Williams, though, the turnover bug continues to plague our boys, and it cost us this week.  Off 2 first half turnovers our Ephs gave up 14 points off (again) a fumble return for a TD, and an interception that ultimately led to another 7 points.  Without those plays this could/would have been a very different game.

It’s unfortunate, too, that we didn’t get a bounce here or there, as both sides had offensive foci in the first half, and were guided by defensive minded play in the second half.
The truth is that this match was either team’s game, and we could have had this won if not for a play or two.

Williams was led offensively again by the passing of Austin Lommen (24 of for 243 yards and 3 TD’s but a pick), and the receiving of Alex Way, Steven Kiesel, and Darrias Sime who had, respectively, 6, 10, and 4 receptions each.

Defensively the Ephs were again led by James O’Grady who again (for the 3rd week in a row) recorded double digit tackles, as did Antonio Blanco.

In summary… Another BRUTALLY TOUGH loss for our Ephmen.  The effort was there, and we had the opportunities….. we just again came up slightly short.

Anyway, for your conveniences I’ve included the two respective schools’ write-ups below:
