In a seesaw game in which 4 of 5 combined PAT’s were unsuccessful and the lead changed hands 4 times, Bates defeated a tough visiting Williams football team last Saturday 19 – 12 (after leading 13 – 12 at the half).  The game wasn’t decided until the final minute when a Williams drive that began on the Williams 40 with 2:17 left that potentially could have won or tied the game stalled on the Bates 31 yard line when the Ephs turned the ball over on downs with 53 seconds left. Bates then ran out the clock to secure the victory.Â
Â
Bates scored first, followed by 2 Williams TD’s, to put Williams up 12 – 6 with 1:43 left in the first half.  Unfortunately, the Eph defense couldn’t keep the Bobcats out of the endzone, and the half ended with Bates taking a 13 – 12 lead (which they never gave up).
The Ephmen had trouble getting on the board in the 2nd half as the Bates defense tightened up.   Williams had second half drives of TOOD (turn over on downs) in Bates territory, followed by 3 punts, a FGA that was blocked (that would have given Williams the lead), and a final drive – immediately following the Bates TD that increased the Bates lead from 1 to 7 points – that stalled on the Bates 31 with 0:53 seconds left.
It was a TOUGH loss for Williams who pretty much split the statistical battle with Bates, but came out on the bad end of the scoring stat (which is the only statistic that counts).
Williams was again led offensively by the passing of Austin Lommen (22 of 35 for 206 but 2 picks), the receiving of Steven Kiesel (6 for 68), the running of captain AlexScyocurka (19 for 59 and both TDs), and the special teams play of return man Connor Harris who averaged 38 yards/return for 3 KO returns.
Â
Defensively the Ephs were lead by Etienne Aduya and James O’Grady who each recorded double digit tackles.
Â
In summary… TOUGH loss for our Ephmen.  The effort was there, and we had the opportunities….. we just came up slightly short.
